European Starlings

European Starlings are destructive to native wildlife pushing out native cavity nesters like bluebirds, owls, and woodpeckers. Large flocks can damage crops, and their waste can spread invasive seeds and transmit disease. To deter them you should cover fruit-bearing trees and shrubs with netting, gather up and discard fallen fruit. Cleaning beneath hanging feeders to remove spilled seed is also a good idea. You can use a hawk decoy or hang strips of aluminum foil (or shiny party streamers) from the trees or other high points around your home and garden. The sun reflects off the shiny surface and bothers their eyes, deterring them from coming near.

Ultrasonic noise makers are static sound-emitting bird deterrents you can place in gardens, patios, balconies and other open spaces to help scare various nuisance birds away. There are several versions of natural DIY bird repellent sprays you can make at home such as a concoction of chili peppers, water, and vinegar. The birds you see occupying the nest from one year to the next are likely to be adult birds that had bred in the same colony, even in the same nest hole the previous year, or first time breeders that have arrived from outside the colony.

Starlings are one of the most destructive alien species ever introduced in Canada and get recklessly aggressive towards other birds and occasionally humans if they get too close to their nests during fledgling season.

What You Need to Know About European Starlings

  • What is living under my shed?
Look for signs of digging around the bottom of your shed (or gazebo, deck, sunroom, garage) and listen for sounds. Raccoons often make a den to have their babies under structures like this. Baby raccoons make chirping sounds. Notice any scents? It could also be a skunk or family of skunks as this is also very common in the Springtime.
  • Can I live trap?
We do not live trap during baby season as removing the mother animal means the babies will not survive without her. It is not advisable or legal for you to live trap and move an animal.
  • Should I block the entry point?
If you block an entry point and the animal has babies inside she will cause more damage making more entry points to get to her litter. Calling a wildlife removal specialist who can inspect and properly treat the issue is advisable.
  • What are these holes in my garden?
Finding holes, tunnels and paths in your yard and garden likely means you have mice, rats or other rodents living there.
  • What’s that noise in my bathroom vent?
If you’re hearing noises or smelling something foul from your vent birds have likely gotten in and made a nest. A wildlife professional can remove this and install a new animal proof vent.
  • Why do I see wasps but no nest?
Wasps or hornets can make their nest inside your roof where you can’t see it – but you are seeing lots of wasps buzzing around! Having the nest sprayed will take care of it for you.
  • What’s that scratching sound?
Where are you hearing it? In your ceiling/attic? It could be squirrels, raccoons, mice or rats.
  • Should I cut down my tree to stop animals from getting on my roof?
A lot of people do this but raccoons and squirrels can climb right up the side of your house so cutting down your nice tree will not solve the problem.
  • How can we keep rodents out of our yard?
Remove all food sources such as pet food, bird seed and composters. You can also purchase scented deterrents and noisemakers at most hardware stores.
  • Who do I call for a stray domestic animal?
You would call your local kennel, animal rescue or city hall for advice.
  • Should I call 911 for raccoon sightings?
You should never call 911 unless it is an emergency.
  • Who should I call for injured or orphaned wildlife?
You should call a local animal rehabilitation centre or search for one at http://www.ontariowildliferescue.ca/

Grackles

Grackles like agricultural fields and are more of a threat to crops than crows. They are not however an invasive species. The Common Grackle is indeed native to Ontario and closely related to many Ontario songbirds and to the red-winged blackbird. To deter them you can try a hawk decoy or hang strips of aluminum foil (or shiny party streamers) from the trees or other high points around your home and garden. The sun reflects off the shiny surface and bothers their eyes, deterring them from coming near.
